The print is titled Part of the Church at Arque and was created by the celebrated British architectural artist Samuel Prout (1783–1852), one of the most influential illustrators of European architecture during the Romantic period. Prout was widely admired for his ability to capture the picturesque character of historic buildings, particularly medieval churches, city gates, and ruins. His work was highly influential among both artists and architects; even J.M.W. Turner admired his architectural drawings. In this composition Prout focuses on the elaborate Gothic portal of the church, rendering the structure with remarkable sensitivity to texture, light, and architectural detail. The façade is shown with pointed arches, sculptural tracery, crocketed pinnacles, and projecting gargoyles typical of late medieval Gothic architecture. The worn surfaces of the stonework are rendered with delicate tonal lithographic shading, giving the structure a sense of age and weathered dignity. In the foreground, small figures—likely local villagers—stand near a roadside cross and along the path leading to the entrance, providing both scale and a sense of daily life within this historic setting. This print was published in London in **1821 by Rodwell & Martin**, as part of a series of lithographic architectural studies produced by Prout following his travels through France and continental Europe. Prout was among the early British artists to adopt lithography as a means of reproducing his drawings. The technique allowed his expressive architectural sketches to be translated into prints that retained the character of the original drawings while making them accessible to a wider audience. Samuel Prout’s lithographs are considered milestones in the development of architectural illustration and the Romantic appreciation of medieval European architecture. His prints are collected both for their artistic merit and for their role in shaping 19th-century interest in Gothic architecture. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and scattered foxing across the sheet, typical for early lithographs of this period. The printed image remains clear and well preserved with strong tonal detail. Framing tips: This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or antique gilded frame with a wide museum-white or warm ivory mat. The strong architectural composition makes it particularly suitable for display in classic interiors, libraries, or European-inspired spaces. The print is sold unframed.
