This finely engraved and delicately hand-colored map illustrates the kingdom of jerusalem and its surrounding regions during the era of the crusades, offering a vivid geographical representation of one of the most significant periods in medieval history. Published in london in 1817 by robert wilkinson as part of his esteemed atlas classica, the map was created as an educational tool to accompany the study of historical and biblical narratives. Titled the kingdom of jerusalem with its environs at the time of the crusades, the map centers on the levant, encompassing present-day israel, palestine, lebanon, and parts of syria, with extensions into cyprus, asia minor, and egypt. The crusader states and neighboring territories are clearly delineated with subtle original hand coloring, highlighting regions such as tripoli, antioch, and edessa, alongside the central kingdom of jerusalem. The map is rich in historical and geographical detail, with numerous cities, rivers, and routes carefully marked. Important locations such as jerusalem, acre, damascus, antioch, and tyre are prominently identified, reflecting their strategic and religious significance during the crusades. The mediterranean coastline is elegantly rendered, while inland features provide context for the complex political and military landscape of the period. A particularly notable feature is the large engraved genealogical chart in the lower right, detailing the succession of rulers of jerusalem and cyprus. This addition enhances the map’s historical value, providing insight into the dynastic lineage of the crusader kings and the broader narrative of the latin east. An inset map of the nile delta and egypt further enriches the composition, emphasizing the wider geopolitical context. Engraved with clarity and precision by e. Bourne, the map exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of early nineteenth-century british cartography. The balanced layout, soft pastel coloring, and crisp typography make it both an important scholarly document and a visually appealing decorative piece. A compelling work for collectors of medieval history, crusader cartography, or decorative antique maps, offering a detailed and engaging view of the holy land during a defining historical era.
