17th-century oil on copper, small devotional painting, French school.
This delicate painting depicts the Virgin Mary in a bust portrait, her hands clasped in prayer. Her slightly bowed head and gentle gaze convey a profound spiritual depth.
The intimate, compact composition is characteristic of 17th-century private devotional images. The rendering of the face, with its elongated and delicate features, as well as the use of chiaroscuro, reveal a restrained Baroque influence characteristic of the French school.
Later period frame.
