A striking and highly decorative Blaeu map of the Ottoman Empire, “Turcicum Imperium” (1642), capturing the empire at its greatest extent and celebrated for its large figural cartouche and exceptional Golden Age engraving quality. This visually powerful composition combines refined Dutch cartography with dramatic figural ornament, making it both an important historical document and a statement piece for sophisticated interiors. Centered on the eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula, the map illustrates the vast reach of the Ottoman world—from the Balkans and Greece through Anatolia and the Levant, extending into North Africa and deep into Arabia and Persia. Major geographic features such as the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Red Sea, and Caspian Sea are clearly delineated, underscoring the strategic importance of the region within global trade and empire. Blaeu’s engraving is distinguished by its clarity and balance, with finely rendered cities, rivers, and mountain ranges enhanced by original hand coloring. The composition is further elevated by its rich decorative program. In the lower left, an impressive figural cartouche depicts an Ottoman sultan—often associated with Suleiman the Magnificent—seated in authority, flanked by attendants in elaborate dress. In the upper right, an ornate dedication cartouche adds a layer of refinement and prestige, while delicately engraved ships animate the surrounding seas. This map was issued in the Dutch edition of Blaeu’s monumental atlas, Toonneel des Aerdrycx (also published in French as Le Theatre du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas), one of the most important cartographic works of the 17th century. Its inclusion in the Dutch atlas edition adds historical authenticity and places it firmly within the core output of the Blaeu workshop during its peak. A highly desirable example of Blaeu’s atlas work, this map appeals equally to collectors of Golden Age cartography and to interior designers seeking a visually rich and culturally significant focal piece. The combination of scale, subject, and decorative impact makes it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, or refined hospitality interiors where a strong historical narrative enhances the space.
Condition report: Good condition for its age, with splendid original hand coloring. Central fold as issued. Light, even toning and minor age-related wear to the margins. Paper remains strong and stable. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: A dark walnut or ebonized frame with a generous ivory or warm off-white mat will enhance the contrast and highlight the decorative cartouches. Museum glass is recommended to protect the hand coloring while maintaining clarity. Particularly effective in darker interiors or spaces with warm, ambient lighting. Technique: Copper engraving with original hand color Maker: Willem Jansz. Blaeu & Joan Blaeu, Amsterdam, circa 1642
