A refined and highly detailed early 19th-century french map depicting the nile river basin and the vast regions of egypt, nubia, abyssinia (ethiopia), and kordofan, drawn and published under the direction of the esteemed cartographer m. Lapie. Issued in paris in 1838 as part of the important atlas universel de géographie ancienne et moderne, this map reflects a period of increasing european interest in the geography and exploration of northeast africa. It also shows the strait of hormuz. The composition centers on the full course of the nile, from its mediterranean delta through upper egypt and deep into the interior regions of nubia and abyssinia. Both the white nile and blue nile are carefully traced, with particular attention given to their confluence near khartoum and their respective sources, including the ethiopian highlands and lake tana. The map extends eastward to the red sea coast and westward into the deserts of darfur and kordofan, illustrating both known territories and regions that were still only partially explored at the time. Lapie’s cartographic style is characterized by clarity and balance. Mountain ranges are rendered using fine hachuring, giving a tactile sense of the rugged terrain of the ethiopian plateau and surrounding highlands. River systems, caravan routes, settlements, and regional divisions are meticulously labeled, offering both geographic and cultural insight into the region during the early modern period of exploration. The delicate original hand coloring subtly distinguishes territories and enhances readability without overpowering the engraved detail. The engraving was executed by pierre antoine tardieu, a member of the distinguished tardieu family of engravers, whose work is renowned for its precision and elegance. His fine linework ensures exceptional legibility, even in densely annotated areas, and contributes to the map’s refined aesthetic typical of high-quality french atlas production of the period. This map holds particular appeal for collectors interested in african exploration, the history of the nile, and early european representations of ethiopia and sudan. It also serves as a visually compelling decorative piece, well-suited to both classic and contemporary interiors when framed with a wide ivory mat and a dark wood frame.
condition: good antique condition with age-related toning and scattered foxing, mainly visible in the margins. Original fold lines as issued. The engraving remains clear and well-preserved, with attractive original hand coloring. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: this map displays beautifully with a wide ivory or warm off-white mat and a thin dark walnut or ebonized frame. A museum-style presentation enhances the delicate engraving and soft coloration. Ideal for a study, library, or travel-inspired interior. Technique: engraving with original hand coloring maker: m. Lapie, engraved by pierre antoine tardieu, paris, 1837
