Authentic early 18th c. decorative map with restorations. This richly engraved and original hand-colored map of the Holy Land, titled Iudaea seu Palaestina, was produced by Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg around 1710–1720. It is one of the most iconic early 18th-century biblical maps, widely recognized for both its geographic detail and elaborate Baroque decoration. The map depicts the sacred geography of the Holy Land, divided into the Twelve Tribes of Israel and clearly distinguishing the kingdoms of Judah and Israel. Extending from the Mediterranean coastline across the Jordan River into regions such as Edom, Moab, and Syria, it reflects a synthesis of biblical tradition and early modern cartographic knowledge. The visual richness of the engraving is enhanced by two striking cartouches. In the upper left, a dramatic biblical scene shows Moses receiving the Ten Commandments, surrounded by divine light and storm clouds—an exceptional example of Baroque narrative engraving. In the lower right, a second cartouche features figures in biblical dress examining a map, reinforcing the scholarly and religious significance of the region. Homann’s cartography, influenced by earlier work such as that of Guillaume Sanson, is distinguished by clarity, strong engraving, and decorative ambition. As founder of the Homann Heirs publishing house, he set a new standard for German atlas production, and his maps remain among the most collected of the period. This example stands out for its attractive original hand coloring, clear plate impression, and balanced composition. Maps of the Holy Land have enduring international demand, appealing to collectors of cartography, religious history, and decorative wall pieces. Fair antique condition. The sheet shows overall creasing and has been trimmed into the margins, in places close to or just within the platemark. There are substantial old paper repairs visible on the verso, executed to stabilize the sheet. Despite these condition issues, the map retains a strong visual presence with attractive original hand coloring. Framing tips: Best presented in a deep walnut or black frame with a wide ivory mount. Museum glass recommended to protect the hand coloring and enhance clarity.
