A highly decorative and historically important blaeu map of the holy land, “terra sancta… palestina” (1629), celebrated for its rich biblical associations and its striking figural cartouche depicting moses with the tablets of the law. A highly decorative and historically important blaeu map of the holy land, “terra sancta quae in sacris terra promissionis olim palestina” (1642), celebrated for its rich biblical associations and its striking figural cartouche depicting moses with the tablets of the law. This visually compelling composition combines early 17th-century dutch cartographic precision with powerful religious symbolism, making it both a significant historical document and a refined statement piece for sophisticated interiors. The map depicts the biblical lands of the eastern mediterranean, centered on palestine and extending across present-day israel, lebanon, jordan, and parts of egypt and syria. Key locations of deep historical and religious importance—such as jerusalem, bethlehem, the dead sea, and the river jordan—are clearly identified, reflecting the geographical framework of biblical narratives. The mediterranean coastline, sinai peninsula, and surrounding mountainous terrain are rendered with remarkable clarity, emphasizing both the physical and symbolic landscape of the holy land. Blaeu’s engraving is finely balanced and richly detailed, with delicately engraved topography, cities, and regional divisions enhanced by original hand coloring. The composition is further elevated by its elaborate decorative program. In the lower center, a bold cartouche presents the title within an ornate architectural frame, flanked by figures including moses holding the tablets of the law—an unmistakable reference to the sacred significance of the land. Additional decorative elements, including compass roses, ships, and sea creatures, animate the surrounding waters and reinforce the map’s visual appeal. Published in amsterdam by willem jansz. Blaeu and later included in the dutch edition of his monumental atlas toonneel des aerdrycx (also issued in french as le theatre du monde), this map represents the height of dutch golden age cartography. Its early date of 1629, prominently engraved within the cartouche, further enhances its desirability among collectors. A highly sought-after example of blaeu’s atlas work, this map appeals equally to collectors of early cartography, those with an interest in biblical history, and interior designers seeking a culturally resonant and visually refined focal piece. Its combination of subject matter, decorative richness, and historical importance makes it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, or elegant interiors where depth and narrative are valued. We guarantee that this is an original 17th-century engraving, not a reproduction or facsimile. All items we offer are authentic works of art over 100 years old. Please note that the piece is sold unframed; any framed images are for visual presentation and interior inspiration only.
