Curved ceramic sculpture depicting a human–insect hybrid creature, combining a looped organic form with a distorted human face and expressive surface. This work belongs to the series Bichos, developed by Óscar Aldonza Torres in 2026, in which the human figure is subjected to processes of deformation, hybridization, and material transformation. In this piece, the body unfolds into a pronounced curved structure that approaches a loop or arch, creating a compact yet dynamic sculptural presence. The form departs from linear extension to emphasize tension and return. The body bends inward, generating a near-circular gesture that concentrates the sculpture’s energy within a contained space. This looping configuration distinguishes the piece within the series, introducing a sense of contraction and internal movement rather than directional flow. At one end, a human-like face emerges, modeled with expressive distortion. The features—mouth, cheeks, and eyes—retain recognizably human traits, yet appear altered, exaggerated, and slightly unstable. from the head extend thin aluminum antennae, reinforcing the insect-like condition of the figure. This combination produces a hybrid presence that oscillates between familiarity and estrangement, between empathy and unease. The ceramic surface is treated with dark glazes interspersed with green tonal variations, creating a mottled and irregular skin. The glossy finish enhances the perception of volume and curvature, allowing light to articulate the rounded form and emphasize its continuous structure. The body reads as both mass and movement, a solid form that nonetheless suggests flexibility and organic instability. Formally, the sculpture operates through curvature, compression, and internal rhythm. The looped configuration introduces a sculptural logic based on return and enclosure, contrasting with other pieces in the series that expand outward or extend linearly. Here, the body folds onto itself, reinforcing the idea of containment and tension. As a contemporary ceramic sculpture, the piece functions as a collectible object suitable for shelf, console, or tabletop display. Its compact yet articulated form allows it to engage with surrounding space in a concentrated way, offering a distinct sculptural presence despite its moderate scale. While autonomous as an individual work, the sculpture is conceived to coexist with other figures from the Bichos series. In group installations, pieces such as this introduce curved and looping dynamics that contrast with more vertical or elongated forms, contributing to a broader sculptural composition in which each figure participates in an evolving spatial dialogue. This human–insect hybrid ceramic sculpture reflects a process-based approach in which the body is transformed through material and gesture. The result is an expressive contemporary sculptural object that navigates the boundary between grotesque and playful, human and non-human, structure and organic mutation.
