During her American road trip, Crowther photographs a vintage American blue and white automobile in front of a life-like painted mural that borders a car park.

Crowther positions herself and her camera off to the side of this scene so that the life-like mural can be contrasted against its humdrum surroundings. The Kalakala mural was painted in 1995 by Cory Ench, and depicts the stylish Art Deco-era ferry, the Kalakala, which was designed by Boeing.

The Kalakala ferry ran between Port Angeles and Victoria for thirty years. It was anchored in Seattle, making it a draw for tourists and sightseers who were attracted by the stylish chrome exterior of this ferry.

By situating herself at this angle, Crowther captures a merging of multiple worlds. The Kalakala ferry represents the 1930s, the classic American vintage automobile represents the 1950s and 1960s, while the humdrum gray carpark casts a final, dismal glow of the 1970s and 1980s.
