Composed of six aluminium elements, regolith is assembled by hand in a fixed sequence. Once joined, the parts interlock through geometry alone, without screws, welds, or adhesives. Its softly reflective surface catches light like fine dust across metal, giving the object a muted, almost particulate presence. The name refers to the loose material covering the lunar surface, and that association remains structural rather than illustrative: the object feels formed, compacted, and quietly remote. A fitted lid functions as wind guard, allowing regolith to operate both indoors and outdoors as ashtray or incense burner. In use, it moves between utility and ritual without fully belonging to either category. Regolith is a small object, but it carries the same discipline as the larger works — precise, self-contained, and suspended between tool, relic, and constructed atmosphere. The case study. Each object represents a specific condition within this ongoing case study. Bureau of entropy is a design collective founded in 2025 by marvin julian freund and matthias figurowicz. The collective is rooted in a shared background in toolmaking craftsmanship, where both founders developed a deep understanding of material behaviour, precision manufacturing, and metalworking processes. This early, hands-on experience continues to inform their approach to construction and structural logic. Following this foundation, freund pursued studies in architecture with a focus on spatial design, proportion, and material presence, while figurowicz studied mechanical engineering, specialising in structure, mechanics, and functional systems. Over time, their distinct disciplines evolved in parallel, shaping complementary perspectives on form and function. In 2025, these paths converged in the formation of bureau of entropy. Today, the collective works at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and craftsmanship, developing furniture and lighting objects that emphasise structural clarity, material intelligence, and reduced form.
