This large Japanese Iwayado kuruma-dansu is an impressive traditional storage chest with a strong and refined presence. Set on wooden wheels, it combines a richly worked front with heavy metal fittings, creating exactly the balanced presence that makes this type of tansu so admired. The keyaki front, made of Japanese zelkova, displays a warm reddish-brown sheen and a lively grain pattern that gives the piece great depth and character.
Dimensions: height 105.5 cm, width 124.5 cm, depth 45 cm. Weight: 68 kg.
The layout is both attractive and highly practical. At the front, there are six drawers fitted with metal handles and locks, alongside a drop-front compartment on the right-hand side. Behind this compartment are two additional drawers, making the piece not only visually interesting but also highly functional for everyday use. A particularly charming detail is the drawer with a small hidden compartment.
The chest is complete with a key that fits all locks. The locking bar, or bō, used to secure the drawers, is also still present and can be locked.
What stands out especially is the contrast between the richly figured front and the more restrained side panels, finished with robust metal carrying handles. Together with the wooden wheels, these details emphasize the chest’s original mobile character, while the strong iron fittings, broad drawers, and asymmetrical composition create a powerful and harmonious whole.
The wooden wheels recall the original function of the kuruma-dansu as a mobile storage chest, designed to move valuable belongings quickly to safety in times of emergency or fire.
In a contemporary interior, this remains an exceptional piece. It works beautifully as a characterful storage chest in a living room, entrance hall, office, or shop interior, while also serving as a striking statement piece with warmth and presence. The broad top surface is also ideal for displaying ceramics, ikebana, sculptural objects, or other carefully chosen pieces, allowing the chest to play not only a practical role but a strong decorative one as well. A particularly complete and decorative Japanese kuruma-dansu, with beautiful proportions, rich detailing, and a commanding presence in the room.
