Kristine engelbrecht works with plywood—a material that, in her hands, is transformed into tightly composed, aesthetic, and three-dimensional works. By working with the wood as layered elements, she creates interplay and contrasts between light and shadow, surface and space, and succeeds in giving the wood tactile qualities reminiscent of textile. The many possibilities in composition and scale, based on a classical modernist grid, make the works immediately recognizable in all their simplicity. And yet not quite because the works change character depending on where they are placed, how the light falls on them, and whether they are painted in bold colors or stained in neutral tones. See less
