He received Flemish training. He quickly established a reputation as a portraitist, known for his vibrant colors. He occasionally produced historical and religious paintings, landscapes, and still lifes; his technical mastery allowed him to play with objects, colors, and light. His portraits are imbued with a vitality and sensitivity that make him one of the greatest painters of the reign of Louis XV and the Regency. Overshadowed by his friend and rival Hyacinthe Rigaud, who was the fashionable painter attracting the high aristocracy, Largillière deserves to be remembered as one of the great painters of French art.
