This antique oak vanity with white marble and a curved mirror top dates from around 1910 and features an elegantly structured design. The combination of the curved mirror frame, light-colored stone surface, and linear body creates a calm, stylishly cohesive effect.
Historical Context:
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, washstands were a staple of middle-class bedrooms and dressing rooms, particularly in homes and apartments without permanently installed bathrooms. They served daily personal hygiene needs and provided space for washbasins, water vessels, towels, and personal items. Marble tops were functionally practical for such furniture, as they were more resistant to moisture than wooden surfaces. Mirrored tops expanded the functionality, transforming the piece into a combination of a washstand, storage unit, and dressing table.
Features:
- Two small upper drawers above three wider main drawers with a clearly structured front design throughout. - Top section with a light-colored marble slab, a marble back panel, and a curved mirror in a profiled wooden frame.
Design:
In terms of form, the piece bridges the gap between late historicist styles and the already simplified early forms of the 20th century. The body features a linear structure, while the front is defined by profiled drawer panels and subtly curved base lines. The mirror frame introduces softer lines without appearing ornamental. The brass hardware and the light-colored marble surface create material contrasts that visually define the structure.
Function: In the past, this piece served as a washstand for daily personal hygiene in the bedroom or dressing room. Today, it is suitable as a dresser in the bedroom, hallway, or dressing room, as well as a striking standalone piece with additional mirror and storage functions.
