Lepanto (modern-day Nafpaktos), located in Greece, is famous for being the site of the naval battle that ended Ottoman expansionism.
In 1571, the Crusader forces (Venice, Spain, Malta, Genoa, etc.) joined forces and once again confronted the Ottoman fleet of Selim II, which suffered a crushing defeat. No fewer than 400 galleys were mobilized.

Oil on canvas from the 17th century, on its original stretcher and frame, relined in the 19th century; old restorations, wear, and paint losses.
