A beautiful gilt bronze cast, signed Raingo Frères, after the famous Roman marble sculpture attributed to Praxiteles (c. 395–326 BC), discovered in 1792 during excavations at Gabii, near Rome. This 19th-century reinterpretation testifies to the scholarly taste of the period for antiquity and the exceptional craftsmanship of the Raingo firm, renowned for the quality of its bronzes and chasing.
The goddess Artemis, protector of nature and the hunt, is depicted in a pose of great delicacy, captured at the moment she is about to fasten her cloak. She wears a short chiton with wide sleeves, the folds of which are rendered with remarkable precision. Her gaze, deliberately lost in the distance, faithfully reflects the classical canon, expressing the sacred distance characteristic of Greek deities. Her wavy hair, held back by a thin headband, adds to the grace of the figure. The slightly swaying posture, supported by a stylized torso, enhances the balance and elegance of the composition.
The gilding highlights the fine chasing and underscores the quality of craftsmanship characteristic of the Raingo Frères workshops, one of the great Parisian firms of the 19th century, suppliers to the Crown and renowned for their bronze furnishings.
Raingo Frères was a Parisian firm founded in the early 19th century by Zacharie-Joseph Raingo and his brothers. Renowned for its clocks, gilt bronzes, and mantelpieces, it was a supplier to the Crown, favored by Louis-Philippe, Napoleon III, and the great European courts. Their exceptionally high-quality production is highly sought after today.
