We have included a photo of the condition in which we found the cabinet in Southern Germany; as you can see, at that time it could hardly be considered a proper piece of furniture. All the moldings, the crest, and the legs had disappeared, and the cabinet had been completely repainted in a dull, dark brown color. However, beneath the layers of paint, a portion of the original, highly exceptional painting was visible, making it absolutely impossible for us to pass up this piece. The cabinet is characterized by very bright, striking colors with distinctive patterns and decorations. The two generous floral panels on the doors complete the ensemble. We removed the later applied layers of paint with the utmost care, miraculously managing to save the greater part of the original painting. Missing parts such as the moldings, legs, and crest have been reinstalled, using only authentic, old materials. We deliberately did not attempt to replicate the original painting; In our opinion, it should be visible that this piece has been saved and restored. The cabinet has been thoroughly cleaned, fitted with a new working lock, and the sporadically present old traces of woodworm have been carefully inspected and treated. This piece of furniture originates from the region around Thalmassing, where we also purchased the cabinet. It is an authentic and typical example of folk art from this region.
