artist giovanni colmo (turin, may 13, 1867 – turin, april 24, 1947) after graduating with a degree in civil engineering in 1891, he was soon hired by the technical offices of the city of turin. In 1896, he joined the artists’ circle, where he would exhibit his work for thirty-five years. In 1902, he was invited to the first turin quadriennale and continued to participate in that event thereafter. In 1923, having resigned from his municipal position, he devoted himself exclusively to painting, opening a studio that was very popular and traveling to paint from life. Having lost his studio during the war, he continued to work between garessio, his mother’s birthplace, and finale ligure. His work, rooted in the traditions of piedmontese landscape painting—from delleani to reycend to follini—is distinguished by a vivid and luminous palette and a style characterized by rapid brushstrokes, though it remains within honestly conventional limits. The small panels are of particularly high quality.
