Historical context: Such cane chairs were part of the tradition of light, movable seating for salons, bedrooms, or small seating groups in the French-influenced domestic culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Viennese cane webbing offered an airy, relatively light seat and was particularly common where a more refined, less bulky style of furniture was desired. Features: The seat and backrest are crafted with Viennese cane webbing and exhibit the open, regular weaving structure typical of this technique. Also striking are the curved legs, the carved floral motifs on the frame and crown of the backrest, and the cross-bracing in the base.
