An elegant French chair in the Louis XV style, circa 1920s, with a seat and backrest made of Viennese cane webbing. The softly curved lines, the restrained carving, and the overall harmonious proportions result in a calmly structured piece of furniture with a clear formal connection to the French Rococo influence. Historical context: Such cane chairs were part of the tradition of light, movable seating for salons, bedrooms, or small seating groups in the French-influenced domestic culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Viennese cane webbing offered an airy, relatively light seat and was particularly common where a more refined, less bulky style of furniture was desired. Features: The seat and backrest are crafted with Viennese cane webbing and exhibit the open, regular weaving structure typical of this technique. Also striking are the curved legs, the carved floral motifs on the frame and crown of the backrest, and the cross-bracing in the base. Design: The chair's design is formally based on the Louis XV style and its later interpretations: curved outlines, gently curved rails, cabriolet-style legs, and sparingly used floral carving. Function: Originally, the chair served as a light, elegant seat in living rooms and reception rooms. Today, it can still be used as a dining room or side chair, as well as a standalone piece in a bedroom, dressing room, or as part of a small seating group.
Dimensions in cm: Height 98 / Seat height 46 / Width 52 / Depth 49. Material and condition: Beechwood, stained, with Viennese cane webbing on the seat and back. Very good condition considering its age and use; the cane webbing is well-preserved and taut, and the chairs are very sturdy.
