"gateway" is a beautiful and unique charcoal drawing on panel of a dynamic horse jumping in mid-air. The composition is contemporary, playing with the positive and negative space. This piece is shadow framed with a simple white frame around the panel. It is not framed behind glass as it is a matt-varnished drawing on panel - more like a painting. Artist statement by patsy mcarthur: gateway is the last available drawing from my 2017 equine series created for my london show, stillness in motion at osborne studio gallery in mayfair. My interest in the horse in motion as subject matter runs parallel with my figurative work. My sister works with competition horses so i’ve had access to equine models for a long time, and been drawing them for many years. I’m interested in their shapes and dynamism and by removing any background context from the image, i aim to focus the viewer on their power and grace through the air. Gateway is a great example of this and has strong positive and negative space with an energetic, diagonal composition. In my equine work i have always been trying to make contemporary, emotional drawings which have as much to do with us as humans as they do with horses. Scottish artist patsy mcarthur explores the grace and power of human movement in her naturalistic drawings and paintings. Her latest works, including small ink studies, charcoal and graphite drawings, and large oil paintings, convey a palpable sense of strength and athleticism, while also evoking a transcendent quality in the depiction of the human form in various states of suspension, from leaping and soaring, to flying and falling. Above all, a feeling of freedom is carried throughout. The artist studied painting in aberdeen in the northeast of scotland at the gray's school of art, where she received an honors b.a. In fine art. She was awarded the royal scottish academy john kinross scholarship to study abroad in florence. In 2001, mcarthur completed her m.a. In european fine art from the winchester school of art in barcelona. Mcarthur has lived and worked in australia, spain, china, berlin and new york and is currently based in brighton, uk. This multinational perspective is reflected in her work by her striking ability to capture the universality of human emotion. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
