On a strict, rectangular, dark-patinated base, supported by delicate, fire-gilded feet, the figure of Psyche, a princess of such great beauty that even Cupid, the god of love, fell under her spell, stands prominently on a pedestal. After many dramatic twists and turns, she was ultimately made immortal by Zeus and reunited with her beloved. She is recognizable by her butterfly wings. In her hands, she holds a wreath of flowers, symbolizing her grace and connection to nature, as well as a spear or long dagger, representing the attempted betrayal of Cupid. The figure is depicted in dynamic forward motion, as if striding confidently and boldly onward, aware that justice will ultimately prevail for good and truth. The lids of the two vessels to her left and right are adorned with butterfly-shaped handles. These handles have removable inkwells, and a recessed rectangular tray extending along the front is designed as a writing utensil rest; this tray is also removable.

A richly decorated vase motif is affixed to the front of the base as a fire-gilded, openwork plaque.

The design adheres strictly to Empire motifs, an era in which depictions of Psyche in a wide variety of scenes were highly popular. See less
