An exceptional and increasingly rare late 19th-century wall-mounted fireplace tool set, masterfully executed in wrought and cast iron with richly cast solid brass elements.
Originating from France and dating to the Victorian period, circa 1880–1900, this piece represents a refined synthesis of utility and ornament at the height of decorative metalwork.
The architectural backplate is crowned with an elegant pierced crest and adorned with a finely cast sunburst motif, a subtle neoclassical reference symbolizing warmth and the hearth as the center of domestic life.
The sculptural silhouette and balanced proportions elevate the object beyond mere function, giving it a striking wall presence akin to a decorative artwork.
Suspended beneath are three original tools — poker, shovel, and tongs — each fitted with beautifully detailed solid brass handles.
The handles feature intricate geometric and foliate casting, culminating in generous spherical finials that provide both visual harmony and a satisfying tactile weight.
The contrast between the deep, matte iron and the warm, luminous brass — now enriched by a naturally developed patina — creates a timeless and highly sophisticated aesthetic.
Unlike more commonly encountered freestanding hearth sets, this wall-mounted example is notably rarer and suggests placement within a more considered and refined interior.
It offers both a practical solution and a sculptural focal point, ideal for curated spaces where historical character and material authenticity are paramount.
This piece stands as a compelling testament to 19th-century craftsmanship, when even utilitarian objects were elevated through artistry and attention to detail.
A rare surviving example of its kind, presenting an opportunity to acquire a distinctive and decorative antique of enduring appeal.
Very good antique condition, with age-appropriate wear consistent with over a century of use.
The iron elements show minor oxidation and surface wear, while the brass retains a rich, untouched patina.
Structurally sound and complete with all original components.
