The Bastiano three-seater sofa, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Knoll. Characterised by an architectural and geometric structure, typically crafted from solid rosewood, the Bastiano is renowned for the balance between the rigidity of the wooden frame and the softness of the loose cushions, making it a manifesto of functional yet aesthetically pure design. Afra Bianchin, born in Montebelluna in 1937, and Tobia Scarpa, born in Venice in 1935 and son of the renowned architect Carlo Scarpa, met during their university years at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice (IUAV). Their union was not only romantic but also professional, giving rise to an artistic and design partnership of great significance on the international design scene. Throughout their careers, the Scarpa couple collaborated with numerous world-renowned companies, developing projects that combine aesthetics, functionality and technological innovation. In 1970, they received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award, and in 2008, Tobia Scarpa was awarded the Compasso d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award. The choice of natural materials and the innovative use of wood, glass, leather and metal lend their works a timeless quality.’ The creations of Afra and Tobia Scarpa are highly sought-after in the collectible design market. The Soriana Armchair and the Bastiano Sofa are among the pieces most sought after by collectors, with valuations varying according to the year of production, rarity and condition. Their lamps for Flos and furniture for Gavina and Cassina are also highly prized for their historical and artistic value. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
