A powerful example of mid-century Brutalist mixed-media art by renowned Arizona artist Beth Ames Swartz (b. 1936). This piece, titled "Camelback #4," captures the raw, geologic intensity of the Southwestern landscape through a process of layering and distressing papier-mâché with earth pigments and fire. The result is a highly textural, "monolithic" aesthetic that celebrates the beauty of decay and rebirth. It is housed in its original, minimalist plexiglass "shadow box" case, providing a clean, modern contrast to the rugged, organic form of the artwork within.
Dimensions: 22 1/4" H x 31 1/4" W (Plexiglass case)
Markings: Artist signed in ink on the front bottom, and pencil-titled "Camelback #4" on reverse.
Condition: Artwork Condition: Excellent. The mixed-media elements, including the papier-mâché, pigments, and metallic leaf, are structurally sound and retain their original vibrancy. There is no evidence of fading, crumbling, or moisture damage to the core art piece.
Case Condition: Good. The custom freestanding plexiglass display case is clear and sturdy. However, there is a minor 1-inch crack on one of the corners (specify top or bottom corner if known). There may also be light surface scuffs consistent with age, but these do not obscure the view of the art.
Stability: The case remains fully functional as a protective enclosure and standing mount for the artwork.
