This example departs from the more common straight cylinder form, featuring a subtly bellied body with a flared (outturned) rim, giving it a softer, more sculptural profile.

The planter is finished in a matte sandstone “lava” glaze, characterized by dense speckling and natural tonal variation in warm gray and taupe. The dry, textured surface is typical of Gainey’s mid-century production and was designed to complement modern architectural interiors.

Executed in heavy stoneware with three drainage holes, consistent with Gainey’s functional planting vessels used in both residential and commercial settings. The form, combined with the scale and glaze, makes this a strong standalone piece or anchor planter within a grouped arrangement.
