In Japanese art, persimmon trees and their fruit are often used to symbolize the autumn harvest and the joy of the season. Persimmons are the national fruit of Japan and a seasonal icon. They are considered a symbol of longevity and good fortune and are often featured in art and poetry. The Japanese word for persimmon, kaki, is pronounced the same as the word for "joy comes". The detail of both the bird and the fading persimmon leaves on this painting are especially striking. Painted on silk with mineral pigments; signed (in cursive Kanji) and sealed by the artist in ink. The scroll comes with a Paulownia wood storage box, with the artist’s name.

ARTIST: Mori Shumei (1892-1951, also known as Moriaki) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga style. He enjoyed considerable success during his time: his artworks were exhibited extensively across Japan. Mori Shumei was, especially, know for his paintings of birds and flowers. Today his work can be found in museum collections in Japan.
