Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney (known as C.V. or Sonny), the son of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art) and Harry Payne Whitney, left an indelible mark on the sports of Thoroughbred racing and polo.
His deep ties to Thoroughbred racing began when C.V.’s grandfather, William Collins Whitney, established the Whitney Stables in Saratoga Springs, NY at the turn of the 20th century. C. V.'s father bred almost two hundred champions including the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1915. In 1930, C.V. inherited Whitney Stables and built on the success of the previous generations. He was a founder of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs. After his death, his wife, Marylou Whitney, the "Queen of Saratoga," took the mantle of Vanderbilt Whitney Thoroughbred racing. Their signature Eton blue and brown silks and helmet are emblems of excellence.
C.V. Whitney was also a three-time U.S. Polo Open Champion whose legacy includes the C.V. Whitney Cup Polo Tournament. His father —a leader in U.S. polo since its founding in 1876—organized the US polo team that beat England in 1909.
