This offering features a compelling pair of original graphite sketches by the distinguished American artist Harry Joseph Ahysen (1928-2006). A master of maritime subjects, Ahysen was twice honored as the "State Artist of Texas" (1980-1981) and served as an official artist for the U.S. Coast Guard. His academic precision and deep personal history with the sea - stemming from his upbringing in Port Arthur and service in the U.S. Navy - are on full display in these two works.
The first sketch depicts a wrecked, listing wooden boat resting on a shoreline, while the second captures a dynamic scene of seagulls surrounding wooden mooring pilings. Both pieces showcase Ahysen's sophisticated draftsmanship and professional rendering of nautical textures. Each work is signed "H. AHYSEN" in the artist's stylized capital-letter signature in the lower right.
