Subject Biography: Clara Barton (1821-1912)
Clara Barton was a pioneering nurse, teacher, and patent clerk who became one of the most prominent humanitarian figures in American history. During the Civil War, she earned the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield" for her dedicated service to wounded soldiers. In 1881, she founded the American Red Cross, leading the organization for 23 years and establishing its legacy of disaster relief and emergency aid. See less
