This original work by Rhode Island artist John Day (1932–1982) depicts the working waterfront at Wickford Shipyard in Wickford, Rhode Island, with fishing boats docked at low tide, figures working on the dock, and seagulls lifting off above the scene. The composition has a confident graphic quality, with bold outlines and a restrained palette of grays, ochres, and the red trim of the center vessel that draws the eye immediately. The medium appears to be acrylic or tempera on paper, mounted to board, and the piece is presented without glass in a substantial oak frame.
