Created in the style of Realism and Impressionism, this vintage medium-sized artwork is hand-painted by artist Montague. Though there are several artists named Montague (Montague Leder, Valerie Montague, Allen Montague and James Montague), this one most likely is James based on subject matter, brush stroke and framing. James frequently used a palette knife or heavy brushwork to create a 3D effect on the petals, had a preference for high-contrast colors and ornate gold-leaf frames. Known for his vibrant, textured oil paintings, James (1906-1999) was born in New York, studied at the Art Students League there and under masters like Fernand Leger in Paris, and served as Executive Director of the Southern Vermont Art Center for more than a decade (1964-1975).
