An exceptional antique Japanese Hirado (Mikawachi) porcelain lidded incense box, or kogo, intricately hand-modeled in the form of a naturalistic turbo shell. This piece showcases the superior sculptural mastery of the Meiji-era potters, utilizing the hineri-zaiku (hand-shaping) technique to create a highly tactile, organic exterior.
The exterior features a mottled iron-wash "volcanic" glaze that mimics a weathered sea shell, accented with hand-applied cobalt blue (sometsuke) barnacles and highlights. The interior reveals the signature pristine, high-kaolin white porcelain body for which the Hirado kilns are famous.
The substantial, well-weighted base is sanded flat and unglazed, exhibiting minor kiln-firing pinholes and iron spotting consistent with traditional wood-fired kiln production of the early 20th century. The interior walls show subtle undulations from the hand-forming process.
Condition
Excellent Antique Condition. No cracks, repairs, or chips to the delicate sculptural points. The interior porcelain remains bright white and clean. Authentic kiln-firing characteristics (pinholes and tiny iron specks) are present as expected for period Hirado.
