Antique Currier & Ives hand-colored lithograph titled "Lady Thorn – The Celebrated Trotting Mare, formerly 'Maid of Ashland.'"
Original 19th-century American sporting print published by Currier & Ives, depicting the famous trotting horse Lady Thorn pulling a sulky at speed. Lady Thorn was one of the most celebrated trotting horses of her era, and prints of her were widely collected in the mid-1800s.
Details:
• Publisher: Currier & Ives
• Title: Lady Thorn
• Medium: Hand-colored lithograph
• Date: circa 1860s
• Framed and preserved under glass
• Outside frame size: approx. 9½" x 7½"
Condition:
The print shows age-appropriate toning and light surface wear consistent with a genuine antique. Paper texture, lithographic shading, and hand-applied color are clearly visible. No modern printing dots or offset characteristics observed. The piece remains sealed in its original paper backing to preserve condition; interior image dimensions have not been measured for this reason.
The wood frame appears period and shows expected wear, adding to the overall authenticity and presentation.
Notes for collectors:
This is an authentic antique Currier & Ives lithograph, not a modern reproduction. Smaller-format examples such as this were commonly issued and remain desirable among collectors of horse racing, equestrian art, and 19th-century Americana.
A well-preserved and attractive example of classic Currier & Ives sporting imagery.
