The richly patinated storage trunk or blanket chest … Read more Exquisite 19th century Burmese Mandalay period gilt Buddhist chest or trunk table. The richly patinated storage trunk or blanket chest has a removable lid and was made for storing manuscripts and documents. The chest features a hand-decorated exterior with finely painted and incised narrative scenes on a warm ochre ground, framed by floral and geometric borders. Gilt decorated Buddhist scenes of followers surrounded by mountains, clouds, temples, and animals finished in faded lacquer covered with gilt. The main front panel depicts an ornate landscape with figures, horses, vegetation, and architecture framed by concentric borders. The sides display smaller decorative reserves set against a dark ground, while remnants of a painted trim remain visible along the molded edges and base. The top has been weathered beautifully over time, exposing the natural wood surface and contributing to the trunk’s authentic character. The interior is plain unfinished wood and offers ample storage. The piece is equally functional as a blanket chest, coffee or drinks table, decorative accent, or as storage. Appears to have been made to stack another decorated storage box on the top. From an estate in Malibu, CA.
