A large contemporary ink work by Chinese artist Fung Min Chip (China, 1951-). The calligraphic work was created on traditional Chinese Xuan paper and features a vertical pair of couplets composed by the artist and written in bold black characters on a mottled ink-stained background. The couplet can be translated into English as the following: Between the two legs is the boundary of the good and the evil: Above the two eyes is the union of the god and the demon. Two red seals were placed in the center of the composition in a counter-traditional way. The year and the artist's name were incorporated and blended into the work on the right and left. The piece reflects the artist's long practice in the exploration of traditional Chinese calligraphy with abstraction, deconstruction and often esoteric meaning for their mantra-like format. The work is presented under plexiglass in a thick and beveled oak frame stained back with a cream color mat under Tru Vue plexiglass, all in museum quality and ready for display. The sight of the work itself is approximately 70 x 24.
Provenance: Galerie De Monde. With the label verso as shown.
About the artist:
Fung Ming-chip was born in Guangdong in 1951, grew up in Hong Kong and has lived in New York and Taiwan. A self-taught artist, Fung has studied and practiced traditional calligraphy for a long time before evolved his work into Abstract Expressionism. While retaining the integrity of the Chinese characters, the artist meditates on the morphogenesis of the form by experimenting the compositional space between the lines and strokes. The artist also explores the multiple meanings of Chinese characters in their isolated vs contextual forms.
Elevating Chinese calligraphy into a form of contemporary art, Fung's works are held in important art institutes including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many international private collections.
