Artist Biography:
Born in 1974 in Wainwright, Alberta Canada and grew up in Red Deer, Alberta, Kim Dorland is a contemporary painter based in Toronto. He received his B.F.A from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1998 and completed his MFA at York University in 2003. Inspired by his upbringing in the forested aspen parkland, the artist creates work on canvas of landscape and portrait with thickly applied paints, often mixture of oil and acrylic with other found materials. The bright sometimes fluorescent colors, bold strokes with sharp and jagged edges and the sculptural textures evoke a sense of "abstract realism" and "idyllic discordance". The visual impact can often be mediatative and provocative at the same time.
According to Artsy: “I draw my subject[s] from the experiences I have lived through and my impoverished upbringing,” the artist explains, referring to the images of wooded landscapes, trailers and low-income housing, open-air parties, fistfights, and Canadian flora and fauna that recur throughout his works.
Dorland's work has been exhibited at galleries and museums in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, London, Milan, Vancouver and Denver including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (solo), the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (solo), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
