The paintings are known as Toba-e, as they are stylistically based on works by Toba Sōjō - a 12th century priest, who created the famous Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga, or "Scroll of Frolicking Animals and People". Toba-e handscrolls and books were highly popular during the Edo era, depicting humorous scenes of daily life, folk tales, and sometimes social commentary. They are considered a precursor of modern Manga / Comic Books.

These paintings have been recovered (cut) from an antique Japanese handscroll (emakimono) and have been newly framed.

CONDITION: Good condition for age. Please note that antique and vintage artworks may have traces of time, stains and creases due to age, so please review all photos.

PERIOD: Edo
