Springtime Apple Trees in Bloom
Watercolor & Gouache by Charles T. Haight (1904–1980)
A luminous springtime orchard rendered in watercolor and gouache — pink blossoms cascading across a bright green meadow under a pale blue sky — signed by one of mid-century America's most distinguished artist-designers.
Charles T. Haight served as Director of Interior Design at B. Altman & Company, New York, where he was personally commissioned to redecorate the White House for both the Truman and Eisenhower administrations one of the most prestigious design appointments in American history. His papers are held today by the Office of the Curator at the White House.
In 1974, at age 70, Haight began a serious and devoted study of watercolor painting. He held several one-man exhibitions before his death in 1980 — giving him only six years as a painter. As a result, authenticated examples of his artwork are exceptionally rare. A specialist who recently examined this work remarked that the quality was remarkable and that Haight deserves to be far better known as an artist.
This is not simply a beautiful painting. It is one of a very small number of works by a man who shaped the rooms where presidents lived and worked — now revealed as a gifted artist in his own right.
