The stepped serving tray is meant to serve as a plazalike platform for cups and a cocktail shaker which would represent skyscrapers in the New York skyline.

Bel Geddes (1893–1958) was a pioneering figure in American industrial design, widely credited with helping to popularize the concept of streamlining in everyday objects.
