A refined example of Art Deco and American Machine Age design, this "Manhattan" tray by Norman Bel Geddes for Revere Copper and Brass Company (c. 1935–40) reflects the 1930s fascination with architectural urbanity and modernity. The stepped serving tray is meant to serve as a plazalike platform for cups and a cocktail shaker which would represent skyscrapers in the New York skyline.
Notably, this example retains its rare removable wire insert. The grid introduces an industrial texture that contrasts beautifully with the sleek metal surround while providing a practical serving surface.
Bel Geddes (1893–1958) was a pioneering figure in American industrial design, widely credited with helping to popularize the concept of streamlining in everyday objects. Originally trained in theater design, he brought a dramatic, forward-looking vision to industry—establishing one of the earliest industrial design studios in the United States and influencing everything from consumer products to transportation concepts. His work, including the landmark Futurama exhibition at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, helped define the visual language of modern America and solidified industrial design as a profession.
The Manhattan tray is currently held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago and is a highly desirable and sophisticated piece for collectors of American modern design.
