Very old large Japanese tin-clad sliding door crafted in Japan during the Meiji period (late 19th century).
The wooden frame is made of cedar and covered with hand-applied tin plates.
Over many decades, the surface has developed a soft bluish patina, where the original tone of the tin and the discoloration from oxidation create a subtle and beautiful gradation — almost like an abstract painting shaped by time.
This door can be used in many ways: as an architectural sliding door, a tabletop, or as sculptural wall art.
It remains in very good antique condition.
The piece evokes the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy that finds beauty in imperfection and impermanence.
Its quiet, humble presence reflects a refined simplicity far removed from excess decoration.
A rare and unique object.
Since ancient times, Japanese people have created and handed down tools made from familiar natural materials, shaping a culture rooted in resilience and harmony with nature.
Through years of use, such objects gain character and begin to reflect the lives they have accompanied.
In today’s world of mass production and disposability, restoring and reusing these objects carries profound meaning.
It reminds us of the lasting value of craftsmanship and the deep relationship between people and the objects that enrich their lives.
Guided by this philosophy, we carefully select powerful and one-of-a-kind antiques from across Japan, preserving their beauty and cultural significance.
