Hand painted coffee cups and saucers. Famous historic design by Shobido Honten. These beautiful coffee cups were purchased directly at the Shobido Honten factory in Arita town, Kyushu, Japan. Old Imari porcelain, beloved by European royalty and nobility. Arita ware is the first type of porcelain produced in Japan, dating back to 1616 during the early Edo period. Porcelain production began when kaolin, the raw material for porcelain, was discovered in Izumiyama, Arita town, by the Korean potter, Lee Sam-pyeong. Subsequently, Arita ware became a major industry for the Saga domain, and as painting techniques such as underglaze blue and overglaze enamel, as well as molding techniques, developed, Arita grew into one of the world's leading porcelain production centers.
Replacement costs for these cups and saucers are $180 each. There are 8 cups and saucers, never used.
