Okutani Shūseki (1871-1936) painting of three Red-Crowned Cranes flying at sunrise. In Japanese culture Red-Crowned Cranes are a symbol of longevity, fidelity (they mate for life), good luck, peace, and wisdom. Signed (in cursive Kanji) and sealed by the artist in ink.
This painting has been recovered from an antique scroll, folding screen, fusuma door or album leaf and has been newly framed.
ARTIST: Okutani Shūseki was a prominent Japanese painter in the Kyoto art world during the Meiji and Taisho periods. He is best known for his landscape, bird and animal paintings, as well as his mastery of the Maruyama school style of painting. He was born in Osaka in 1871 as Okutani Tsunejirō and studied painting from a young age, first as an apprentice of Shige Shuntō (1833–1904) and then Mori Kansai (1814–1894). With several exhibits in Japan, Shūseki enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime. Today Shūseki’s work can be found in museum collections around the world, including the British Museum and Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
