He is particularly known to collectors for his intricate collage works which, like those of Betye Saar, explore somber themes of the African American experience through the juxtaposition of ephemeral artifacts. He often refers to his works as quilts and this atypical post modernist painting appears to channel the pure abstraction and improvisation of the 19th century Gee’s Bend tradition of enslaved and sharecropper quilters from that Alabama plantation.
