Built in the 1970s by a … Read more A one-of-a-kind studio craft doctor’s desk fashioned from solid planks of rosewood and teak. Built in the 1970s by a student of RIT’s “School for American Crafts” for his doctor and medical inventor father, it features interlocking bands of the two hardwoods, a built in viewing screen for x-ray films and an adjustable desktop lamp by Nessen Studios. Although life took him in different directions, he went on to create many original designs in wood following graduation from the Rochester Institute, which at that time was one of the few American colleges to offer a degree in furniture making. The craft school originated in the late 1940s when the Danish designer Tage Frid emigrated to the United States to take up residency there. He succeeded in building the school’s woodworking program into one of the most robust in the country before famously being enticed to teach at RISD in the 1960s. Measures 60.75" wide, 31 3/8" high, 23.25" deep at shorter end (right side), 37.75" deep at left side when the return is closed. Up to 70" deep at the left end, depending on how much one decides to extend the return. At a stable placement, the return can be as much as 32" long (and it is 11" deep.
