"A commanding piece of Southern garden history, this two-piece monumental urn was rescued from a historic estate in Greenville South Carolina. Standing 37 inches tall, the cast stone has aged to a magnificent, deep 'limestone' grey with natural lichen and moss highlights that only decades of coastal humidity can produce.
The vessel is a masterclass in Gothic Revival heraldry, featuring a prominent Griffin—the mythical guardian of treasure—set against a shield, flanked by celestial crescent moon and star motifs. The urn rests upon a matching octagonal pedestal adorned with intricate Gothic arch tracery and scrolling vine work. Whether flanking a grand entrance or serving as a singular focal point in a lush garden, this piece carries the undeniable weight and soul of the Old South."
Style: Gothic Revival / Neoclassical.
Heraldic Motifs: The urn features a Griffin (or Gryphon)—a mythical creature symbolizing strength and protection—above a shield. The side panels include a Crescent Moon and Star, which are classic celestial/heraldic symbols often used to denote "Old World" prestige.
Design Details: The vessel features deep gadrooning (the petal-like ridges) at the base and a "tessellated" or mosaic-effect background behind the raised reliefs. The pedestal features intricate Gothic Pointed Arch Tracery with vine-and-leaf carvings.
Era: Mid-20th Century (approx. 1940s–1960s), though the mold design is based on 19th-century European garden antiques.

The cast stone is structurally sound with no major cracks or structural failures. Surface Character: The piece features an authentic 'Lowcountry' patina, including localized moss growth, lichen, and mineral deposits that have developed over decades of outdoor display. Specific Notes: * There are minor 'flea bite' chips to the sharpest edges of the Gothic tracery on the pedestal and the rim of the urn, which are consistent with the age of cast stone and do not detract from the overall aesthetic. The vessel and pedestal are two separate pieces, allowing for easier transport; they fit together securely with a recessed seat. The drainage hole in the basin is clear and functional." less
