Take a look at the figures in this painting. They suspend somewhere between expressionism and realism; they are almost primitive in their execution. And yet, they are solidly anchored to the earth; they are active. They are believable. They are going about their business

Notice the use of bright, uncomplicated blocks of color--the leaves on the trees are that special shade of new-growth green. The sun is bright, but the figures are dressed in warm coats and jackets. They are going about the mundane business of living on a bright cold day in spring.

The artist tells a simple story using the simplest vocabulary in his artistic arsenal. See less
