Set of Three Monumental Modernist Steel Rod Wall Sconces, Switzerland
An exceptional set of three monumental wall sconces constructed of slender blackened steel rods, acquired in Switzerland and reportedly removed from a castle near Lake Como. The group comprises two corner-mounted sconces and one flat wall-mounted sconce, suggesting they were conceived as part of a custom architectural lighting scheme.
Each fixture is formed from a rhythmic arrangement of vertical steel rods gathered tightly at the base and dramatically flaring toward the top, creating an elongated torch or flambeau silhouette. Curved steel bands encircle the rods at the upper and lower edges, while the restrained blackened finish emphasizes the strong sculptural quality of the construction.
Their impressive scale gives the sconces considerable architectural presence even when unlit. When illuminated, the exposed bulbs are partially screened by the closely spaced rods, allowing light to filter through the structure and cast linear shadows onto the surrounding walls and ceiling.
Particularly interesting is the configuration of the group: the flat wall sconce and one corner sconce are approximately the same height, while the second corner sconce rises considerably taller. The variation appears intentional and would have allowed the fixtures to respond to different architectural conditions within the original interior.
Acquired from a European dealer who stated that the sconces came from a castle in Switzerland near Lake Como. Their precise designer and maker remain unknown. The bold geometry and handcrafted steel construction are characteristic of European modernist architectural lighting of the mid-to-late 20th century.
A rare and highly decorative group, equally compelling as functional lighting and sculptural architectural elements.
