A handsome 19th Century English William IV center table in richly figured rosewood, combining the bold architectural forms characteristic of the period with restrained elegance in its proportions.
Dating to circa 1830 to 1840, the piece is a fine representative of the high-quality cabinet making produced in Britain during the reign of William IV, a period that bridged the refined classicism of the Regency with the heavier decorative sensibility of early Victorian taste.
The circular tilt-top is veneered in well-selected rosewood with strong directional figuring that radiates naturally from the centre, framed by a crossbanded apron of conforming veneer. The top tilts on a turned cylindrical column, the base of which is ringed by a carved gadrooned collar where it meets the tripartite platform base. The three sweeping concave legs terminate in turned bun feet, a form closely associated with the William IV and early Victorian periods, and rest on original concealed brass castors, allowing the table to be repositioned with ease.
The rosewood throughout is of exceptional quality, displaying the deep chocolate and amber tones with bold grain markings that made this timber the preferred choice of fashionable makers during the 1820s and 1830s. Tables of this form served as statement pieces in drawing rooms and libraries, equally suited to display and occasional use.
