This wall art has a unique, heavily weathered surface created through an accelerated natural oxidation processes. The organic colors work beautifully in contemporary spaces and with natural materials like wood and stone. The piece can be displayed horizontally or vertically on a french cleat hanger.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

A sheet of 20-gauge copper was aggressively textured by softening the metal and hammering it against rough concrete, resulting in a pitted, irregular surface that looked heavily weathered.

The textured copper was bent into a box shape and a wooden support structure was built inside. The corners of the copper were TIG welded and ground smooth to maintain the illusion of a solid metal slab 1 ¼ inches thick. The back edges were wrapped around the wood structure and mechanically attached.

The sculpture is for indoor display only, as the internal wood structure is not suitable for outdoor use or excess moisture.

DIMENSIONS AND HANGING

The piece measures 30 ⅛ inches tall, 20 ⅛ inches wide, and extends 1 ¼ inches deep. It weighs 21 pounds and hangs flush against the wall using a French cleat hanger system. The piece can be displayed horizontally or vertically on a french cleat hanger.

FINISH AND TEXTURE

When exposed to atmospheric elements over many years, copper naturally oxidizes and changes color, slowly turning dark brown and eventually green. This natural aging process was accelerated in the studio using various acids, chemicals, moisture and salts to produce a varied green and brown patina.

The copper was exposed to chemical fumes within a sealed chamber over several days to intensify the colors. This fuming method allows vaporized acids to saturate the air and react with the metal's surface.

Once the desired colors had developed, the sculpture was washed to stop the chemical reactions and sealed with multiple coats of a clear protective lacquer to preserve the finish and prevent any further oxidation over time. See less
