Geometric planes and curved abstract forms come together in a modern composition that is open to interpretation. The sculpture's three panels look like thick slabs of solid metal, with a raw hammered texture and color palette that pairs well with wood, stone and other natural materials. The clean lines and bold forms suit a range of settings, from contemporary homes to commercial interiors.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
The panels were formed from flat copper sheet metal using hammers and pneumatic tools to create a three dimensional surface. There is about a 1/4 inch of depth in the raised relief, which was driven directly into the metal by thousands of hammer blows, rather than created by adding or removing material. These hammer marks are visible across the metal, creating a rich surface texture and a record of the forming process.
Once the surface relief was formed the sides of each panel were bent over and welded at the corners, creating a hollow metal shell roughly as thick as a penny. The copper shells were mounted to an internal frame and backing board that supports the structure and provides a place to attach the hanging hardware.
Please note, this sculpture is for indoor display only, as the wood components are not suitable for outdoor conditions or moisture.
FINISH AND PATINA
When exposed to atmospheric elements over many years, copper naturally oxidizes and changes color, slowly turning dark brown and eventually green. This process was accelerated in the studio over several weeks using acids, chemicals, moisture and salts to produce a varied patina of deep browns, blacks, and blue-green tones. Once the desired colors developed, the sculpture was washed to stop the process and sealed with a clear protective lacquer to preserve the finish.
DIMENSIONS AND DISPLAY
This copper wall sculpture is a three-panel piece, or triptych, designed to be displayed as a set. Each panel measures 18 inches wide by 20 inches tall and extends 1.5 inches from the wall. The set spans about 5 feet in width depending on the space between each panel. The panels weigh 12 pounds each.
